Mount Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world, with an elevation of 8,485 meters (27,838 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and China. Mount Makalu is known for its isolated location and its distinctive pyramid-shaped peak, which makes it a visually striking mountain. At the base of Mt. Makalu, there lies a natural wonder: The Barun Valley. This valley facilitates stunning elevated waterfalls falling inside the deep gorges, diverse species of flora and fauna with rich cultures of ethnic communities like Sherpa and Kirat. Arrive in Kathmandu, take a domestic flight to Tumlingtar (≈50 minutes), then drive (≈3–4 hours) to the village of Num. Overnight in a teahouse at Num.
Descend from Num through forests, cross suspension bridges over the Arun River, and ascend to Seduwa. Overnight in Seduwa.
Follow a trail through terraced farmlands and forested paths, reaching Tashigaon, the last permanent village. Overnight in Tashigaon.
Embark on a steep ascent from Tashigaon to Khongma Danda, a high ridge with panoramic views. Overnight in Khongma Danda.
Spend the day acclimatizing with short hikes or relaxation while enjoying the views. Overnight in Khongma Danda.
Cross the challenging Shipton La Pass with stunning mountain views and descend into the Dobate valley. Overnight in Dobate.
